앞부분에는 왜 우리가 스케이터 김연아와 당신의 곡 골드를 주목하게 되었는가에 대한 설명이 있습니다. 김연아 선수의 짧은 경력 소개와 함께, 그 중심 메시지는 이겁니다.

 

As we heard the song “Gold” in Yu-Na Kim’s Gala Exhibition last December (2008 Grand Prix Final Championship held in Korea), immediately we fell in love with your voice and the song “Gold” as much as our star Yu-Na Kim’s skating. Many fans agree that the lyrics of “Gold” just reflects Yu-Na Kim’s life story ? who crosses over many huddles of disinterests, injuries, prejudices etc. until she becomes the world’s top skater and your elegant and touching voice is a perfect fit with her performance.

 

우리가 작년 12월 한국에서 열린 그랑프리 파이널 갈라에서 당신의 “골드”를 들었을 때 우리는 바로 당신의 우아하고 애절한 목소리와 그 곡 “골드”에 김연아 양의 스케이팅만큼 빠져들었습니다. 많은 팬들은 “골드”의 가사가 마치 김연아 선수의 삶을 말하는 것 같다고 합니다. 세계 최고의 스케이터가 되기까지 넘어야 했던 무관심과 질시와 부상의 장벽들 그래서 당신의 그 우아한 목소리와 연아양의 연기가 찰떡궁합이라고들 합니다.

I posted a message on Yu-Na Kim’s Fan Site yesterday “What questions would you like to ask for Linda Eder?” and a few hundred fans sent me their own questions. Here are 6 edited and compressed questions that we are dying to hear your answers.

 

어제 팬 사이트에 “Linda Eder에게 뭘 질문할까요?”라고 올렸더니 백여명이 자신의 질문을 저에게 보내 주었습니다. 그걸 편집하고 축약해서 여기 우리가 당신에게 꼭 듣고 싶은 6개의 질문이 있습니다.

 

1. We heard that you published a new album “The Other Side of me” last year. What are reactions on your new album in USA? Do you have any plan to act again in Musical in near future? What does ‘Music’ mean in your life?

 

당신의 새 앨범 “The Other Side of me”가 작년에 나왔다고 들었습니다. 미국 반응은 어떤가요? 그리고 뮤지칼에 또 출연할 계획이 있나요? 당신의 삶에 ‘음악’이란 어떤 의미인가요?

 

The reaction to the new music has been very good.  I had a feeling that most of my fans would like it and that seems to be the case.  I knew a small percentage would not.  The most important thing is that I knew I would gain new fans because it is a popular music format.

 

새 앨범에 관한 반응은 아주 좋아요. 이전의 내 팬 대다수가 이 앨범을 좋아하는 것 같아요. 일부는 아닌 걸 알아요(앞의 포스트에서 밝혔듯이 음악 성향이 좀 다름) 하지만 가장 중요한 것은 이 새 앨범이 pop 뮤직 형식이라 새로운 팬들을 얻을 수 있다는 걸 내가 안다는 거죠.

 

I don't think I will do any musicals while my son is so young.  I need to be home for him and when you do a musical it consumes your life.

 

음 당분간 새 뮤지칼은 출연할 수 없을 것 같아요. 내 아이가 아직 어려서요 그랑 집에 같이 있어줘야 해요. 뮤지칼을 하면 삶 전체를 투자해야 해요.

 

Music has given me everything in my life.  It has afforded me a great life that reaches people and it feeds my soul.

 

음악이 내 삶의 모든 것을 주어 왔어요. 사람들에게 다가갈 수 있고 내 영혼에 양식을 주는 훌륭한 삶을 ‘음악’이 내게 주어 왔지요.

 

2. We remember that the song “GOLD” was used in 2002 Salt Lake Olympic opening ceremony. How do you feel that the song is used in Gala exhibition by this young brilliant Korean figure skater? Many of us wonder what brought you to choose this song as the title of your 2002 album and if there was any episode about the song you may introduce to us. Is there any story that you can tell?

 

 “GOLD”는 2002년 솔트 레이크 올림픽 개막식에 사용되었다고 알고 있습니다. 이 음악이 지금 이 젊고 뛰어난 한국의 피겨 스케이터에게 사용되고 있다는 데 대한 감상은 어떤가요? 우리 중 많은 사람들이 당신이 왜 이 곡을 2002 앨범의 타이틀로 삼았는지 혹은 이 곡에 대해서 우리에게 들려줄만한 이야기가 없는지 궁금해 합니다.

 

It was an honor to have the song played in the 2002 Olympics and to feel a part of all of that.  I have seen my songs used by skaters many times and it is always fun to watch because it is like a dance routine set to the song only even more powerful because it combines sport.  I think GOLD is a perfect song choice for a skater because is has an arc.  It grows and builds.  it is emotional and the best skating is always filled with emotion.

 

2002년 올림픽에 이 곡이 사용되고 그 올림픽의 일부가 된 것은 정말 영광스러웠어요. 저는 제 곡이 여러 번 스케이터들에게 사용된 것을 보아 왔어요. 참 재미있었지요. 음악에 맞춰서 댄스 루틴을 짰지만 원곡보다 훨씬 힘이 있었지요. 스포츠니까요. 제 생각에 “GOLD”는 스케이터들에게 정말 딱 맞는 곡 같아요. 그 곡에는 굴곡이 있는데 그것이 자라나서 형태를 갖추지요. 매우 감성적인 곡이죠. 그리고 최고의 스케이팅은 항상 풍부한 감성이 차 있지요

 

The song is from a musical called CAMILLE CLAUDEL.  We were trying to bring it to broadway.  I enjoyed playing the true life character of Camille.  She was larger than life and her story ended tragically like so many classic tales.  GOLD was the final number that I sang in the show and I think it captured her life perfectly.

 

이 음악은 뮤지컬 ‘까미유 클로델’에서 따 온 거예요. 그걸 브로드웨이에서 공연하려고 했었지요(이루어지지 않았음) 저는 까미유의 진실한 삶의 캐릭터를 연기하는 것이 즐거웠어요. 그녀는 정말 대단한 삶을 살았고 많은 고전적인 이야기처럼 비극적으로 그녀의 이야기가 끝나게 되지요. “GOLD”는 그 뮤지칼에서 제가 피날레로 부른 곡이고 제 생각에 그 곡이 까미유의 삶을 완벽하게 전달한다고 생각해요.

 

3. As a singing artist and musical actress, after seeing Yu-Na Kim’s performance from attached videos, could you give some advices to her especially in her music interpretation, facial expression!s and hand/body movements? In competitions, Yu-Na used a part of musical “Miss Saigon” last season (This season she uses Dance Macabre and Seherazade ). What might be adv/disadv of using musical on figure skating and in what aspects a skater should pay most attention to?

 

가수이자 뮤지컬 배우로서, 제 메일에 동봉된 연아양의 연기 비디오를 보신 후, 연아양에게 음악의 해석이나 표정 연기, 손/몸동작에 대하여 조언해 주실 것이 있는지요? 연아양은 작년 시즌에는 뮤지컬 미스 사이공에서 곡을 따 왔었는데 뮤지컬 곡을 피겨 스케이팅에 사용하는 것이 어떤 장단점이 있을까요? 또 스케이터는 어떤 점에 주의해야 할까요?

 

Skating may be a sport but it is also an art.  Yu-Na is a beautiful and brilliant performer.  I think she is already very expressive but you can always do more to reach the audience.  You have to feel the emotions.  Camillie Claudel gave everything for her art and that is what Gold is about. 

 

스케이팅은 스포츠지만 또한 예술이라고 생각해요. 연아양은 아름답고 영리한 스케이터군요. 제 생각엔 연아양은 이미 대단히 표현력이 좋아요 다만 관중에게 다가가는 것에는 언제나 조금 더 할 일이 있게 마련이죠. 말하자면 그 곡의 감정을 그대로 느껴야 한다고 생각해요. 까미유 클로델은 예술에 모든 삶을 바쳤지요. “GOLD”는 그것을 노래한 겁니다.

 

4. Many Korean fans of you and Yu-Na dream to see an ice show of Yu-Na performing “Once upon a dream” or “Gold” with your “LIVE” singing. “Once upon a dream” was also used in Yu-Na’s Gala in 2007 and shocked many fans in Korea for its perfect fit of “tragic and touching” voice and performance on ice but Yu-Na was heavily injured at the latter part of that season so that she could not perform it again until now. Do you have any plan to have concert tour in Korea in the future? If that happens sometime, would you make the fans’ dream (you and Yu-Na perform together) true?

 

많은 한국의 팬들(당신과 연아양의)의 꿈은 아이스 쇼에서 연아양이 “Once upon a dream” 이나 “Gold”를 당신이 라이브로 노래부르는 가운데 연기하는 것을 보는 겁니다. “Once upon a dream” 이 연아양의 갈라에 2007년 사용되었을 때 그 비극적이고 애절한 목소리와 연아양의 연기가 완전 합일하는 것에 우리들은 넋을 잃었거든요 (하지만 그 시즌 후반부에 부상이 있어서 지금까지 그 곡을 다시 연기하지는 못했네요) 한국에서 혹시 공연할 계획은 갖고 계신가요? 또 만약 이런 팬들의 꿈(연아양과 공연하는) 이 이루어지는 기회가 미래에 온다면 그런 제안이 온다면 응하시겠습니까?

 

At this time I have no plans to tour in Korea but it would be an honor to one day perform live with Yu-Na.  I have sung live skating shows before and it was really amazing.

 

지금은 한국 공연 예정이 없습니다. 하지만 연아양과 라이브로 공연할 수 있는 기회가 온다면 영광입니다. 저는 스케이팅 쇼에서 라이브로 노래부른 적이 있어요. 그건 정말 굉장했거든요!

 

 

5. Your elegant and touching voice, as we experienced from GOLD, is a wonder to Korean fans. At age of 47, how can you keep your health and beautiful voice? Some of us visited your blog and found that you are an animal lover. Do you have any social activity about it? If yes, could you introduce some of your pet loving story?

 

당신의 우아하고 애절한 목소리 ( 우리가 “GOLD”에서 들은 것 같은 ) 는 한국 팬들에게 대단한 반응이었습니다. 47세의 나이에 그 아름다운 목소리와 건강을 어떻게 유지하시나요? 우리 팬 중에 누가 당신의 블로그를 방문했엇는데 동물 애호가시라구요. 그 쪽으로 어떤 사회활동도 하고 계십니까?  만약 그렇다면 당신의 애완동물 사랑에 대한 이야기도 들려주시겠습니까?

 

I have always lived a fairly healthy lifestyle.  I have never smoked and I don't drink too much alcohol.  I think that has helped because it all catches up to you after you turn 40.  I try to warm my voice up more these days.

 

저는 항상 대단히 건강한 라이프 스타일을 유지합니다. 담배는 피워본 적이 없고 술도 조금밖에 안 해요.  40 넘어서는 그런 라이프가 도움을 준 것 같아요. 요즘은 목소리를 예전보다 더 따뜻하게 가져가려고 노력합니다.(힘 보다는 부드럽게..라는 뜻으로 보입니다)

I am a big animal lover.  I have always been crazy about horses and have ridden my whole life.  I once was part of a pet fashion show in Manhattan with my German Shepherd dog, Camille.  She had never been in Manhattan and she walked the runway like a professional.  It was fun to be part of something where I knew the audience was not looking at me but at my dog.

 

아! 저는 대단한 동물 애호가예요! 말만 보면 미치도록 좋아하고 어려서부터 쭉 말타기를 즐겼지요. 언젠가는 맨하튼에서 pet 패션 쇼가 있었는데 거기에 제 독일 셰퍼드 ‘까미유’랑 같이 출연했어요. 까미유는 맨하튼이 처음이었고 그런 런웨이에 서는 것도 처음이었는데 마치 프로 같았어요. 사람들이 저보다 제 개를 더 쳐다보는 것을 알고 저도 참 재미있어 했어요. 오랜만의 조연이라…

 

 6. To Yu-Na Kim, who becomes 19 in this September, could you give some advices of ‘Managing Life’ as an artist who keeps glorious life for long? especially for the life off the ice? And finally, could you give some messages to your fans in Korea?

 

이제 9월에 19세가 되는 연아양에게 오랫동안 사람들의 관심 속에서 살아온 당신이 ‘삶의 관리’라는 측면, 특히 경기장 밖의 삶에 대해 조언해 주시겠습니까? 그리고 마지막으로 당신의 한국 팬들에게 인사말을 남겨 주십시오.

 

Have many interests in life.  Don't put all your joy in one thing.  Friends and family are the most important things in life.  Enjoy the press but don't live for it.  It is after all just designed to sell newspapers and the public's interest is always moving on to the next new thing.

삶의 여러 부분에 흥미를 가져라 라고 말하고 싶어요. 한 가지에 연아양의 모든 즐거움을 쏟지 않았으면 좋겠어요. 언론은 즐기되 거기에 얽매여서는 안 돼요. 언론이란 항상 신문을 더 팔기 위해 그러는 거니까요 그리고 대중의 관심은 항상 다음의 새로운 것으로 넘어가니까 (악평이 있더라도) 관심 두지 마세요.

To all the fans in Korea, I am so very happy that my music is enjoyed.  We always work very hard to create the albums so it is nice to know that it is reaching people.  I hope to one day come to Korea.

제 음악을 즐겨 주신다니 행복해요. 우리는 항상 좋은 앨범을 만드느라  노력하고 있는데 그 보람이 느껴지네요. 언젠가 꼭 한국 가서 공연하고 싶어요

*** 아찌 잡설 한 마디

 

Linda Eder는 3월 중순부터 4월 초까지 상당히 빡빡하게 (매주) 공연 스케줄이 잡혀 있군요. 미국 밖에서는 공연한 일이 없는 것 같구요. 다행히 지금 시점이 공연 전이어서 메일이 전달된 것 같습니다. 제가 보낸 메일은 당연히 그 소속사에 가구요 그 소속사에서 린다에게 메일을 전달해서 답을 받은 겁니다. 상당히 개인적인 질문을 한 이유가 그런 원하지 않는(소속사 직원이 대신 답하는) 일이 일어나지 않기 위해서였지요. 연아양에 대해서 더 자세하게 말해줬으면 더 좋았겠지만 첫 술에 배 부르기 힘드니깐두루…1년 내 승냥이 교화시키겠슴다. LA 월드 기간에는 린다는 플로리다와 텍사스에 공연이 있어서 가 보지는 못합니다. 아쉽게도….
